Dan Heisman's Improve Your Chess
Zero Increment Time Management

National Master Dan Heisman is a name that is synonymous with excellence in chess coaching and teaching. Dan authors the award-winning Novice Nook column (winner of three Chess Journalists of America "Best Instruction" awards), aimed at improving adults, for chesscafe.com that are clearly written and offer very practical advice and tips on how to improve your game . In the new Improve Your Chess series, Dan provides instruction by reviewing amateur games played on ICC and showing where the players went wrong and how to improve.

Today's show: A training game between a class player and an IM. 30 minutes with zero increment. The class player falls behind on time and never attempts to avoid unnecessary time trouble. The game remains even but the zero increment looms large. Short on time in the endgame the class player finally blunders but by then it did not make any difference; the IM was going to force his flag to fall even if he played perfectly. You can win with checkmate, you can win by running your opponent over on time.
